A bill that is designed to give the FDA more power to regulate food has just passed in the U.S. Senate. The bill now heads to Obama’s desk where it will be signed into law. The bill passed with a vote of 73-25.
According to FoxNews.com:
The $1.4 billion bill, which would also place stricter standards on imported foods, passed the Senate 73-25. Supporters say passage is critical after widespread outbreaks in peanuts, eggs and produce.
Those outbreaks have exposed a lack of resources and authority at the FDA as the embattled agency struggled to contain and trace the contaminated products. The agency rarely inspects many food facilities and farms, visiting some every decade or so and others not at all.
There you have it folks. Food will henceforth be safe for consumption!
Here is a question for the FDA. If the outbreak was quickly contained and then taken care of, why would we need the FDA to have more resources? Sounds to me like the problem was solved without their assistance. Must the FDA be empowered to wet their beak in all activity they deem fit?
