Oklahoma businesses were especially hard hit and to bring back workers the state is offering twelve-hundred dollar back-to-work incentives. Still, the National Federation of Independent Business’ latest monthly jobs report shows 46% of small business owners across the country have positions they can’t fill. A representative of the group thinks many are staying out of the work force to care for young children or older family members. Oklahoma is one of the states that back in May cut off the extra federal unemployment benefits. Hopefully, those people still on the sidelines will get back to work and our small businesses can being operating at full speed soon. This weird post-pandemic job market is just further proof of the damage state governments did with the heavy-handed lockdowns and why we hope they never come back! The release of confidential tax returns for some of the wealthiest Americans sparked controversy last week, and now Senate Republicans are demanding answers. With today’s ALG Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. Senate Republicans sent a letter to the inspector general for tax issues calling for an investigation after ProPublica obtained and released tax returns of wealthy Americans, information that is supposed to remain confidential. That story included information about Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Tesla’s Elon Musk, among others, showing many paid very little or no taxes at all. According to the senator’s letter, ProPublica’s description of the data strongly suggests that the information originated from within the IRS. If this is true, this constitutes a serious breach of privacy and is a criminal violation of our tax laws. It would be one of the most significant and widespread breaches in the agency’s history and considerably damages the foundational bedrock of our tax system, including American taxpayers’ confidence that the IRS will keep their personal information confidential. An Atlanta ‘defund the police’ backer had his car stolen by kids in broad daylight. With today’s ALG Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. Atlanta City Councilman Antonio Brown voted earlier this year to withhold $73 million from the Atlanta police budget. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, while he was attending a ribbon-cutting ceremony at least four kids jumped into his car and took off. Brown told one reporter, “You don’t immediately think, ‘Oh, these kids are going to steal my car.” The incident occurred in the middle of a crime wave in the city. Brown, who joined the city’s mayoral race less than three weeks ago, is running on a campaign of “reimagining public safety.” Brown said his Mercedes-Benz coupe has keyless push-to-start ignition and he failed to realize it had been started. The councilman described the kids as being between ages 6 and 12. Maybe Brown needs to “reimagine” beefing up policing efforts in his city rather than defunding them.
