Editorial: Not Laughing with Them

  • In a day and age marked by recession and depression, a healthy dosage of humor certainly doesn’t hurt.

And although such laughter will undoubtedly fail to alleviate the country’s economic woes, it may be just what the doctor ordered when it comes to the nation’s great emotional travail—at least when it comes to the irresponsible science and politician-ignited debate triggered by the “Global Warming” hysteria.

For when laughter is paired with hard-hitting political or social criticism, it becomes satire—which is an entirely different (and much more vicious) animal.

In a standout editorial published in Wednesday’s Washington Times, the satirical case is made for the so-called “Gore Effect”—a curious phenomenon that reveals more about the “Global Warming” weather-alarmists than the weather itself. As the comical piece explains:

“Driving snow froze the hopes of organizers of ‘the biggest global warming protest in history’ Monday in Washington. With the government on a two-hour snow delay and the speaker of the House unable to attend because her flight was grounded by inclement weather, shivering protestors gathered on the west front of the Capitol, the latest victims of a climatological phenomenon known by the scientific community as the Gore Effect.

“The Gore Effect was first noticed during a January 2004 global warming rally in New York City, held during one of the coldest days in the city’s history. Since then, evidence has mounted of a correlation between global warming activism and severely cold weather.”

Moving along in the editorial, one encounters the real meat of the argument. It continues:

“Critics claim the Gore Effect is mere coincidence, though one could also argue that coincidence is also the basis for the anthropogenic theory of climate change. Alternative theories, e.g., citing the influence of sun spot activity, have gained increasing credence as scientists have noted global warming in recent years on other planets, which presumably have been human-free. Significant data issues have also arisen, such as the recent discovery of a chunk of Arctic sea ice the size of California that satellites had missed (but which in all probability had been known to polar bears).”

In case one hadn’t yet noticed, the Washington Times is not laughing with the “Global Warming” consortium. It is, as it should, laughing directly at the pseudo-science hucksters.

In fact, like most satire, the humor eventually gives way to intense skepticism—and, in some cases, outrage. When it comes to “Global Warming”, Al Gore and the rest of the environmentalist Chicken Littles, outrage is, indeed, the appropriate response.

If classroom debates and ivory-tower musings were the only arenas to be affected by the “Global Warming” flim-flam, perhaps it would be at least tolerable. Unfortunately, the false premise of manmade climate change is being used to justify a plethora of Big Government, economy-crippling policies that are the last thing this nation needs—especially during a recession.

Under Gore-influenced Obama environmentalist policies, the nation could very well face:

    • A debilitating “cap-and-trade” system—aka a “Global Warming tax”—stifling industrial growth and kicking America’s businesses while they’re down.

    • Increasingly inflated prices as American industries pass along this high-production and regulatory-compliance costs on to the consumer.

    • Stricter environmental regulations in economically depressed states like California and New York driving out more businesses.

    • Millions more people will be out of work, escalating the ever-increasing unemployment rate into Depression-era double digits.

    • Increased government subsidies for favored special interests such as the wind and solar “industries,” resulting in higher and higher taxes.

    • Potential outright bans on so-called “carbon-polluters”—like firewood, coal, or even wood stoves and Yule logs.

Although the “Gore Effect” editorial may be funny, its implications are anything but. For if the environmentalist lobby has its way, the “Global Warming” protestors won’t be the only ones out in the cold.
