  • Charlie Crist Focuses His Mind

The WIRE reported last week that in his increasingly desperate attempt to fend off surging political opponent Mark Rubio, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist dissimulated significantly about a pat on the back he had received from the Cato Institute. He got the kind word right, but he apparently had considerable trouble remembering the year in which year he had received it.

Now, it turns out, Crist’s memory has again failed him: this time about his bonhomie relationship with Barack Obama and his support for Obama’s $787 billion stimulus bill.

Last February, Crist ecstatically embraced Obama and the bill, going so far as to urge Florida members of Congress to help make sure it passed. Swept away in his Obama ardor, he even declared that were he in the Senate, he would have enthusiastically voted for it.

Then, the Governor decided he wanted to be a Senator.

Ergo, this past Wednesday, Crist denied ever having endorsed the Obama stimulus package at all. Appearing on CNN, he suggested that he only acted like he supported the bill to make sure Florida got its fair share. But, he never liked it in the first place.

And one is reminded of Dr. Samuel Johnson’s famous assertion: “When a man knows he is to be hanged in a fortnight, it concentrates his mind wonderfully.” In Mr. Crist’s case, so, apparently, does knowing you want to be a member of the U.S. Senate in 12 months.

“Hmmm, I see where Mr. Crist may need to have his mind refocused.”

    “Pro-Lifers” Put Party Over Principle

According to press reports, a large number of pro-life House members refused to support the Pelosi government health care bill until after they had an agreement had been reached that strong pro-life language would be included in the measure.

WIRE has now learned from reliable sources within the House Democrat cloakroom that the agreement was largely a sham.

According to the sources, at least a dozen of the purported pro-life House members cast their vote for the Pelosi bill after being explicitly told that any pro-life language would be stripped from the measure in the expected Senate-House conference.

In sum, the “pro-life” members allegedly participated in a deliberate deception devised to provide them cover for next fall’s elections. In short, party triumphed over principle.

    Thank You, Mr. President

It’s painful to hear the hostile naysayers defame and denigrate a man tens of millions Of Americans “have loved long since, and lost awhile.” It’s hard to watch the revisionists rewrite history to obliterate the memories so many Americans hold most dear.

And, yet, that’s precisely what the American people are witnessing today as the scribes and Pharisees of the mainstream media besmirch the name of the man behind the fall of The Wall.

On CBS, CNN, and, of course, the ever-errant MSNBC; in Time, Newsweek, the New York Times, and the Washington Post; the bitter pundits are telling a world that knows much better that Ronald Reagan was merely an amiable player who happened along at a propitious moment. They are telling the young — who too often know little else — that this man who confronted the “Evil Empire” and ordained its demise had nothing to do with the crumbling of its icon.

Like the Soviet slave masters of old, they have attempted to airbrush from the picture the man they abhor; they have excised his words and belittled his deeds. Even as a grateful world commemorates his memory, they have come to bury Reagan, not to praise him.

But, thank God, some memories are too firmly etched in the annals of history to be so easily erased. And some men stand far too tall to be laid low by Lilliputians. When Ronald Reagan said, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall,” he had long since undercut its very foundation. By a thousand deeds in a hundred lands, he had already made its fall inevitable.

So, try as they may, the malevolent midgets of the mainstream media cannot denigrate – they cannot desecrate – they cannot dishonor the man, or his moment. For if they did, the very rocks that once comprised The Wall would cry out his name.

And hundreds of millions of former Soviet slaves freed from captivity by the fall of The Wall — that Ronald Reagan ordained — would echo the sweet refrain.

“Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.”
