60% of Americans Prefer Capitalism

By Adam Bitely

60% of American Adults prefer Capitalism over Socialism according to a new Rasmussen Report. Only 18% prefer Socialism. After having a year to experience the further slide towards Socialism, Americans are rejecting it.

A year ago, when a similar survey was conducted, only 53% supported Capitalism while 20% prefered Socialism. One problem exists for Capitalists/FreeMarketeers with the survey’s findings. A portion of Americans believe that Capitalism and Free Markets are one in the same. According to Rasmussen:

However, it’s important to note that just 35% believe a free market economy is the same as a capitalist economy. In fact, despite tepid support for capitalism, 77% of Americans prefer a free market economy rather than a government managed economy. That’s consistent with the 75% who say that business is better at customer service than government.

And compare that too a survey conducted just over at the end of 2008:

It is interesting to compare the new results to an earlier survey in which 70% of Americans prefer a free-market economy. The fact that a “free-market economy” attracts substantially more support than “capitalism” may suggest some skepticism about whether capitalism in the United States today relies on free markets.

Looks like people definitely prefer Capitalism even if they aren’t quite sure what it is. On the flip side, people are experiencing Socialism and are rejecting it overwhelmingly.
