Obey stalls Afghan war funding to get public sector union bailouts

By NetRight Daily –

The true face of David Obey and his Democrat allies in Congress was exposed yesterday. Retiring Rep. David Obey (D-WI), the Chair of the House Appropriations Committee, announced that he would stall a supplemental $33 billion Afghanistan war funding bill in order to assure passage of a bill that would result in $35 billion in payoffs to public sector unions.

Spending taxpayer money has never been a problem for Obey and his cohorts–but alas, when the Unions are on the line, Obey will come to bat.

“I want to wait until the extenders bill is resolved,” Obey told Politico. “All I can do is sit and wait until reality strikes home, and then maybe we’ll get somewhere.”

The Senate is still considering the “extenders” bill, but have hit more walls heading towards final passage. Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine oppose the bill making it nearly impossible for Senate Democrats to reach 60 votes.

The move by Obey exposes the double standard that the liberal left has when it comes to spending taxpayer money in Congress. They will hesitate at nothing to spend your money on the programs they love, but when it comes to something that they know many will raise their arms over, they suddenly have a notion of fiscal conservatism.

In the end, Obey will move the Afghanistan war spending measure to passage, but do not forget the lesson from this exercise. Obey and his Democrat cohorts would rather put soldiers lives at risk on the battlefield than payoff public sector unions.
