By Adam Bitely — Here is some more evidence that politicians routinely use rhetoric that sounds good, even if they don’t agree with it. From Obama’s State of the Union address last week:
I’m a Democrat. But I believe what Republican Abraham Lincoln believed: That Government should do for people only what they cannot do better by themselves, and no more. That’s why my education reform offers more competition, and more control for schools and States. That’s why we’re getting rid of regulations that don’t work. That’s why our health care law relies on a reformed private market, not a Government program.
The only problem is this: Obama and the rest of the progressives don’t believe that there is anything that people can do better on their own than the government can do for them. They don’t believe that government regulations harm the overall economy. They cannot imagine a world where people are free to make decisions without the government somehow influencing the outcome.
Politicians love saying exactly what they think the people want to hear. After all, most of the people only see the speeches and never see the sausage making, so they have no idea if the politician is just running their mouth.
This is a problem that is all too common with politicians in all levels of government.
