President Donald Trump is broadening his trade message to foreign economies to include currency ahead of the G20 meetings in Japan next week, blasting both China and Europe for competitive devaluations of the yuan and euro, respectively. Besides tariffs and subsidies, others weapons that economies wield against each other on the trade front are competitive devaluations, which make exports cheaper and imports more expensive. It is simultaneously a move that increases domestic consumption and boosts profits from overseas. And they can push competitors into recessions. Can Trump work out a deal to stabilize the world monetary system?
