Social media accounts linked to China sowed disinformation prior to the US election, with some continuing to amplify reactions to the Capitol riot. With Today’s ALG Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. International security experts are calling it a significant attempt to influence US politics. A report from Cardiff University in Wales says a sophisticated China-linked social media operation played a key role in spreading disinformation during and after the US election. The network reportedly spread anti-US propaganda which amplified calls for violence before and after the Capitol riot. One researcher said “The behaviour of the accounts was sophisticated and disciplined, and seemingly designed to avoid detection by Twitter’s counter-measures. He added that this raises an intriguing question about how the operators had learned what was and was not likely to ‘trip’ Twitter’s detection algorithms. Clearly -further investigation is needed. But one thing is certain — the Chinese have a vested interest is undermining our freedoms. They are exploiting our political divisions in order to destroy us from within.

Forget Joe Biden’s calls for unity. Members of Congress couldn’t be further divided. With today’s ALG Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. Some House lawmakers are refusing to work with each other. Others are afraid to be in the same room. Two members almost got into a fist fight on the floor. And the speaker of the House is warning that “the enemy is within.” The friction is particularly intense in the House. According to Politico, multiple Democrats said they are considering cutting ties completely with Republican who objected to certifying the 2020 electors. Freshman Representative Cori Bush of Missouri tweeted that GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and her staff “berated” her in a hallway and she now want to move her office – “for my team’s safety.” Republicans, meanwhile, are urging their Democratic colleagues to heed Biden’s calls for unity, arguing that demands to expel or blackball GOP lawmakers, along with the speedy impeachment of Trump, could poison the well for future bipartisanship.

A senate Democrat wants to strip the conservative group Turning Point USA – of its tax-exempt status for the most ridiculous reason! With today’s ALG Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse wants to punish the conservative student organization because because it held large gatherings that he’s calling COVID super spreader events. In a letter to the head of the IRS, Whitehouse wrote: Turning Point USA’s reckless decision to host potential ‘superspreader’ events, in open violation of local COVID-19 regulations, put children and others at risk, and was clearly contrary to the public good. Senator Whitehouse was also the man behind the Obama IRS push to single out groups with conservative-sounding terms such as “patriot” and “Tea Party” in their titles when applying for tax-exempt benefits. This is just another attempt to cancel and silence the voices of conservatives. Oh – and Whitehouse added one more charge against Turning Point — it “has cultivated close ties to President Trump and the Trump family.”

Has San Francisco’s cancel culture finally gone too far? With today’s ALG minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. Thousands of San Francisco residents are banning together to stop the city from renaming 44 schools that honor so-called “racist” historical leaders — including Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. More than 7,200 people have signed an online petition slamming the school board’s controversial vote to scrap the names of former US presidents and war heroes with ties to racism or oppression. As one right-thinking resident said: “We feel that whether socialist, conservative or independent, if you honor truth in history, politics needs to be put to the side. We don’t want to erase things.” The whole point of history is to look at a person’s SIGNIFICANT achievements and contributions and honor those things — not tear them down for their faults. A country with no heroes has no guiding principles and will fail. We can and must be honest about our heroes shortcomings without denying their greatness

Even a left-leaning state like New York is recognizing bad symptoms of the Biden era. But there is a lot of recognition of the sad failures of Governor Andrew Cuomo. Who cares about nursing home patients? According to a New York State man, a lot of people.

Within his first 10 days in office, Joe Biden has proven that his goal is to put America last. He is killing jobs, and encouraging oil and gas workers to retrain to install solar panels making less than half of what they pay now. Team Biden seems to distain any American who gets his fingernails dirty on the job.
