Democratic leaders of the New York State Senate are reportedly working to strip New York Democrat Governor Andrew Cuomo of his emergency powers in the aftermath of his failed – possibly criminal – handling of pandemic. Democratic and Republican lawmakers have been demanding answers since a top Cuomo aide admitted that the Governor’s administration hid data on senior deaths at nursing homes and long-term care facilities over fears of a Department of Justice investigation. According to The New York Times, a vote to strip the Governor of emergency powers could come as early as this week. New York Democrat lawmakers issued a statement calling for stripping Cuomo of his emergency powers.

“While COVID-19 has tested the limits of our people and state – and, early during the pandemic, required the government to restructure decision making to render rapid, necessary public health judgments – it is clear that the expanded emergency powers granted to the Governor are no longer appropriate.” For more check us out at the Daily Torch.com

Big Tech gets into censorship tussle with our friends down under. With today’s ALG minute, I’m catherine mortensen. Facebook announced on this week it will ban Australian media outlets and censor users within the country from sharing or viewing news articles on its service. The move comes in response to a potential Australian law that would force Google and Facebook to pay news publishers for their content.

In a statement, the tech giant said that it will block news content in the country. This is in response to Australia’s proposed Media Bargaining law, which would require Google and Facebook to compensate publishers for content. Google has also threatened to strike back against Australia, warning that it would shut down its search engine within the country should the government persist with what it calls “unworkable” legislation.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison shot back – quote – “We don’t respond to threats. and suggested that Australians could switch their search traffic to Microsoft’s Bing if Google decided to restrict access within the country.

NY Times Rates Trump Worst President on the Economy – and They Wonder Why It is Called Fake News. The paper’s ran a piece arguing that Donald Trump has the worst economic record of any modern president. In three years under Donald Trump the unemployment rate hit its lowest level in 50 years – and the lowest ever for blacks and Hispanics. The poverty rate hit its lowest level ever in the history of the United States. That was also true for blacks, Hispanics, female-headed households. Median household income rose to an all-time high with a gain of more than $5,000 from 2016-19 – and the percentage gains were most significant for minorities. The income gains in three years were higher than the gains in eight years under Obama. Household wealth rose 30% in four years. So how is this not the BEST record of any modern president? The Times counted the massive job and GDP losses of the pandemic year– when the global economy was flattened for much of the first half of the year.

It’s been nearly a month since the inauguration – and yet barriers and continued heavy police presence surround the U.S. Capitol. Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson said the heavy law enforcement presence is to “send a signal” to Trump supporters that they are “dangerous” and “insurrectionists.” He recently told Fox News – “Obviously, leaders in Congress think walls and barriers work because they’ve surrounded the Capitol with them. Johnson said he’s been told the barriers will be in place at least until March. He is not happy about that. He said, “the Capitol is the people’s house. It shouldn’t be barricaded unless there are some real threats that I’m not aware of that they are not telling us about. I think we ought to take that fencing down and return to as normal position as possible. We agree! Keeping the Capitol behind fencing sends a signal that 74 million voters who voted for President Trump are dangerous to our democracy, they’re all insurrectionists, and that’s simply not the case. An Indiana Republican is working to alert Americans to the fact that the Biden team is turning America over to China. In this, the year of the ox, we wonder if the president wants to turn the United States of America into the Peoples Republic of China.

Schools closures have devastating long-term economic consequences. With today’s ALG Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. The longer that schools remain closed or only offer virtual learning the more catastrophic the cost will be for students, parents, and teachers. On average, American students from kindergarten to fifth grade have missed out on 20% of the reading and 33% of the math skills they would have learned in normal times, according to a McKinsey report that analyzed test scores from around the country. As for the long-term impact on the U.S. economy from deprived education, McKinsey estimates a $14 to $28 trillion loss. Stanford economist Eric Hanushek said “Nobody’s paying attention to this absolutely stunningly large economic cost that just keeps piling up.” Hanushek warns policy makers that the main thing that drives both individual earnings and the economy is the skills of the people. Lower test scores translate to lower individual earnings to lower economic growth in the future. Thank you, teacher unions.

McConnell says Trump’s speech ‘not incitement,’ Senate trial was unconstitutional, but former president ‘still liable’ for riot:

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell believes former President Donald Trump committed no crime at the Jan. 6 Save America Rally that preceded the Capitol riot when he told protesters to “peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard”; that holding the Senate trial after Jan. 20 that McConnell himself postponed was unconstitutional; but that Trump can still be held criminally or civilly liable for the Jan. 6 riot. But, if McConnell, who voted not guilty, does not think any crime was committed by the “strict criminal standard,” why would he suggest that that Trump should be held accountable by the criminal or civil justice system?

A Rio Grande Valley, Texas resident is worried that her community could be endangered when President Biden’s Department of Homeland Security releases migrants into her local communities. She says they haven’t been vetted and they could have criminal records. She even calls for a state of emergency to be declared!
