Is the Federal Reserve trying to cause a recession before the Nov. 2020 presidential election?
http://dailytorch.com/2019/06/is-the-federal-reserve-trying-to-cause-a-recession-before-the-nov-2020-presidential-election/
On May 23, the federal funds rate, the benchmark interest rate set by the Federal Reserve, dipped below the 10-year Treasury interest rate and has stayed there since. There were also brief inversions on March 28 and May 15, but they immediately came back into positive territory. Unlike other inverted interest rates, which often foretell a recession in not so distant future, this is one the central bank actually has control over since it sets its own rate. Is the Fed trying to time the next recession before the next presidential election?

Editor’s Note: House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has called for GOP solidarity with President Donald Trump on tariffs against Mexico, promising to hold the line in the House: “House Republicans support the President on Tariffs with Mexico all the way, & that makes any measure the President takes on the Border totally Veto proof. Why wouldn’t you as Republicans support him when that will allow our President to make a better deal.” https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2019/06/05/kevin-mccarthy-backs-trumps-tariff-strategy-against-mexican-migration/
Is the Congressional GOP ready to bow to Wall Street on tariffs against Mexico? http://dailytorch.com/2019/06/is-the-… President Donald Trump threatened on May 30 to raise tariffs on all goods out of Mexico to 5 percent until Mexico gets control of illegal immigrants coming across the U.S. border into America. This of course was enough to send Wall Street into another mini-panic, with corrections on indices like the S&P 500. In the meantime, Senate Republicans are strongly signaling opposition to Trump’s proposed tariff. Apparently nervous investors are more important than securing the border. So far, their response is weak, but what do they care?

Barr, with declassification authority in hand, goes after ‘unprecedented’ intel abuses against Trump campaign, says ‘serious red line’ crossed:

Attorney General William Barr says “the use of foreign intelligence capabilities and counterintelligence capabilities against an American political campaign to me is unprecedented and it’s a serious red line that’s been crossed.” What will Barr’s wide-ranging probe into intel abuses in 2016 against the opposition party at the time, the Trump campaign, in an election year uncover?

Nothing new in Mueller statement as Special Counsel all but urges impeachment:
http://dailytorch.com/2019/05/nothing-new-in-mueller-statement-as-special-counsel-all-but-urges-impeachment/
With a wink and a nod, former Special Counsel Robert Mueller dove into partisan politics to try and kickstart the Democratic House’s impeachment proceedings using his report as a roadmap. But at the same time, it is a half-hearted move. Mueller said he will not be testifying to Congress or saying anything beyond his written report, nor did he add any new information that was not already stated in the report. There was no conspiracy with Russia, the whole reason for the investigation, and any supposed obstruction was the President reacting to that fact. In the meantime, the American people are ready to move on. What do you think?

China not as great a threat on rare earths as they’d like you to think:
http://dailytorch.com/2019/05/china-not-as-great-a-threat-on-rare-earths-as-theyd-like-you-to-think/
The People’s Daily published a commentary threatening that China will cut the U.S. off from rare earth minerals used to make high tech components for computes, smart phones and military weapons systems. There’s only one problem. In 2018 the U.S. ramped up production to 15,000 tons of compounds according to the U.S. Geological Survey as the Mountain Pass site in California reopened. Soon, the processing facilities will be back online, too. So, China can do whatever it wants. What would happen is prices would go up, for a little while, and other countries including the U.S. would just fill in the gaps, not unlike the Arab oil embargo of the 1970s that simply encouraged the rest of the world to drill. What do you think?

Sovereignty first political parties win EU elections in UK, France and Italy, as Biden runs for President of the World versus Trump:
http://dailytorch.com/2019/05/sovereignty-first-political-parties-win-eu-elections-in-uk-france-and-italy-as-biden-runs-for-president-of-the-world-versus-trump/
Political parties pushing sovereignty first policies did remarkably well in European Parliament elections in the UK, France and Italy in May as nations feel increasingly overregulated and held back by the European Union. And it could serve as a bellwether for the U.S. election across the pond in 2020, where President Donald Trump lines up his America first reelection bid and Democratic frontrunner Joe Biden runs for President of the World. In a fundraising call in April, Biden claimed, “I get calls from people all over the world — world leaders are calling me — and they’re almost begging me to do this, to save the country, save the world.” Can you believe this guy?

Democrats can’t win with impeachment witch hunt but perhaps they can’t survive without it:
http://dailytorch.com/2019/05/democrats-cant-win-with-impeachment-witch-hunt-but-perhaps-they-cant-survive-without-it/
53 percent of Democrats say impeaching President Donald Trump should be a “top priority” in the latest Morning Consult-Politico poll, compared with just 28 percent of the nation as a whole who say the same. Overall, 41 percent reject impeaching Trump, including 11 percent of Democrats say there should be no impeachment. If House Speaker Nancy Pelosi does not give her party’s political base what they want, they will be angry that their political leaders have sold them a bill of goods. That they’ve been defrauded. This would certainly suppress Democratic turnout in 2020, and might help Trump win reelection. What do you think?

Did Smoot-Hawley alarmists get Trump tariffs wrong when they predicted another Great Depression?
http://dailytorch.com/2019/05/did-smoot-hawley-alarmists-get-trump-tariffs-wrong-when-they-predicted-another-great-depression/
In 2016, much of the conventional wisdom was that, if implemented, then-candidate Donald Trump’s tariffs would wreck the U.S. economy. It would have the same impact as the 1930 Smoot-Hawley Act, and so the prediction goes, lead to another Great Depression. Trump began levying tariffs on steel and aluminum in 2018, and in the second half of last year, hit China with a 25 percent tariff on $50 billion of high-tech goods and another 10 percent on $200 billion of goods and then raised it this month to 25 percent. Growth in 2018 came in at 2.9 percent, the best since 2015, and the first quarter of 2019 surprised at 3.2 percent. Unemployment is at a 49-year low at 3.6 percent. Inflation is stable at 2.0 percent the past 12 months. Are we anywhere near 1930?

Poll: 51 percent of Americans reject socialism:
http://dailytorch.com/2019/05/poll-51-percent-of-americans-reject-socialism/
Gallup heralded a finding that “Four in 10 Americans Embrace Some Form of Socialism,” which similarly ran on the Drudge Report during the morning of May 21. It paints a picture of socialism on the rise. But is that really what is happening? Left out was the important part, which is that a majority of Americans, 51 percent, still reject socialism. If you take out the undecideds or no opinion, the number who reject socialism rises to 54 percent. Has support for socialism reached a high water mark?
