Is Boehner done?

UPDATE at 9:40 AM: The Boston Globe has endorsed Boehner for Speaker because he will keep Tea Party “extremists” from being relevant in Congress… “For placing ideological purity over compromise, and a willingness to use procedural mechanisms to gum up Congress in order to get his way, Cantor would be a poor choice. Americans who want a more cooperative approach should hope that Boehner prevails, and continues his recent efforts to keep Tea Party extremists out of key committee assignments.”

UPDATE at 9:25 AM: Today is the vote for Speaker. According to our Capitol Hill sources, Boehner cannot win the speakership without Democrats crossing over to support him. Boehner is reportedly trying to convince the Republicans seeking his ouster that he will be a different man in the next Congress:

Boehner has made concessions to the conservatives seeking his ouster – a sign he’s worried about his job. He caved on the Hurricane Sandy package after originally killing Cantor’s efforts to bring the bill to a vote after the “fiscal cliff” package Tuesday evening. After outrage from Reps. Peter King and Michael Grimm from New York, Boehner now will allow a vote on a Sandy package on Friday.

Boehner also, through a spokesman, renewed an old promise he made – but broke. Boehner said he won’t negotiate with the president on his own anymore, and will let the House follow the regular order. “He is recommitting himself and the House to what we’ve done, which is working through regular order and letting the House work its will,” a Boehner aide told The Hill.

UPDATE at 6:00 PM: Matthew Boyle from Breitbart reports:

Outgoing Louisiana Republican Rep. Jeff Landry told Breitbart News there are at least 17 GOP members who plan to unseat House Speaker John Boehner on Thursday, and Boehner may resign on Wednesday evening during or after a GOP caucus meeting.

By Adam Bitely — Rumors are flying all over Washington D.C. that Boehner will announce that he will not stand for reelection as Speaker at a special House Republican Conference meeting this evening. The rumor is confirmed by two members of Congress who have requested anonymity.

Boehner’s resignation would signal one of the greatest falls from power witnessed in the Capitol in years. This would almost certainly set up Eric Cantor to make a run at the Speakership with Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy moving up to the Majority Leader’s slot. Many Washington insiders are speculating that Jim Jordan (R-OH) could ascend to the Majority Whip slot.

Stay tuned for developments.
