Senate Cancels July 4th Recess

As we mentioned last week, efforts were underway to keep the House and Senate in session over the July 4th recess. After Obama challenged Congress to get a debt deal worked out, saying that they should not be taking vacations with the debt crisis looming, Harry Reid has cancelled the July 4th recess for the Senate.

In the House, Rep. Jeff Landry led a group of over 75 Representatives calling on Speaker Boehner and other House Republicans in leadership positions to keep the House in session to prevent Obama from performing any recess appointments. Obama has used recess appointments in the past to put controversial appointments in place, such as Craig Becker to the NLRB.

At this point, it would appear that Obama will not be able to do any appointments and Congress will remain in session.
