Obama lashes out at “deadbeats”

US President Barack Obama speaks during a press conference in the Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House in Washington, DC, December 7, 2010. Obama vowed Tuesday to fight to overturn tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans in 2012, just a day after reaching a compromise with Republicans to extend the cuts for two years. Detached from his teleprompter, Barack Obama is a strangely different character.

Speaking this afternoon to the White House press corps, Obama went off script to scorn House Republicans negotiating to end the shutdown. Obama compared Republicans to negligent home borrowers, saying of people who don’t pay their home mortgages, “they’re just deadbeats.”

Following those revealing words, ALG president Nathan Mehrens made the following statement:

The Obama Administration throughout its entire tenure in office has pushed for mortgage principal reduction policies, cramdowns, and refinancing — all for delinquent mortgage borrowers. Borrowers who he now openly labels as ‘deadbeats.’ Obama’s comments reflect his lack of understanding of how household budgeting works, which looking at this annual budget, makes sense, since he never proposes that budget be balanced ever again.

This is only one in a string of recent analogous gaffes from the flustered president facing blame for shutting down the government.

Last week, speaking to construction workers in Maryland, Obama attached the idea of labor strikes while comparing Republicans to disgruntled employees. As reported by Breitbart’s Ben Shapiro:

Oddly, after veering off teleprompter, [Obama] likened Republicans shutting down the government to striking workers shutting down a business: “Everybody here does their job, right? If you’re working here and in the middle of the day you just stopped and said, ‘You know what, I want to get something, but I don’t know exactly what I’m gonna get, but I’m just gonna stop working until I get something, I’m gonna shut down the whole plant until I get something, you’d get fired.

Except that they wouldn’t. Obama, a constitutional law lecturer at the University of Chicago, apparently forgot about the National Labor Relations Act, which explicitly bars employers from firing striking employees.

Barack Obama’s ad hoc tirades of late may be a glimpse into the lackadaisical ignorance–and perhaps condescending character–of a chief executive lacking leadership or a solution to continue funding the government without sacrificing his sweetheart healthcare law.
