Good Monday Afternoon –
There is a disturbing Judicial appointment before the U.S. Senate. The Senate may promote a rapist, serial killer apologist to the Second Circuit Court if they approve Robert Chatigny. According to ALG News, “This week, the Senate may take up the controversial nomination of Robert Chatigny for the 2nd Circuit Court of Appleals, after being reported from the Judiciary Committee on June 10th. Chatigny currently serves for the U.S. District Court of Connecticut, where he made his claim to fame by ordering a stay of execution in 2005 for convicted serial rapist and murderer Michael Ross.”
Disclosure is overrated. From Robert Romano, “last week, after being on the fast track, campaign speech restrictions on corporations and not-for-profit organizations became sidetracked in the House of Representatives by Congressional Democrats, prompting House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to pull the bill off the floor prior to any vote.”
ACORN”s American Institute for Social Justice could impact mid-term elections. From NRD’s Kevin Mooney, “Despite its recent setbacks, the renamed ACORN network remains well positioned to receive support from left-leaning foundations, corporations, unions and the federal government, according to a whistleblower group comprised of former board members. Moreover, the existing financial apparatus that made it possible to transfer public money away from their stated purpose and into partisan political efforts remains intact.”
No surprise: Rahm traded favors with Blago.
Donald Berwick faces confirmation battle. From the NYT, “In two decades as a professor of health policy and as a prolific writer, he has spoken of the need to ration health care and cap spending and has confessed to a love affair with the British health care system. He has made numerous public appearances to talk about health care and has published a book of his speeches on the topic.” We have covered Berwick at NRD, and you can read more on him here.
Conservatism and the spirit of reform. From the WSJ, “Today’s conservative reformers appreciate that within its limited sphere government should be excellent. Promoting individual responsibility, self-reliance and opportunity requires targeted action, beginning with health-care reform that really controls costs by eliminating barriers on insurance companies operating across state lines and limiting malpractice damages; public-sector reform that reins in unions by reducing benefits and expanding accountability; and education reform that through school-choice programs gives parents, particularly in low income and minority communities, greater control over their children’s education.”
Obama’s climate Rx: All pain, no gain. From the New York Post, “The cap-and-trade bill that the House passed last summer aims to force Americans to reduce those dreaded carbon emissions by 83 percent in less than four decades — to the same per-capita level as 1867. Yet, even under the Al Gore-approved climate-science models, the bill would do nothing to stop global warming.”
Spending will kill, not save, our recovery. From the Washington Examiner, “Congress passed rules earlier this year to prevent itself from spending money it doesn’t have. But the same majority Democrats who voted for Pay-Go simply override those rules whenever they have to pass an actual spending bill. And on Saturday, Obama ripped opponents of his second stimulus, saying that they are endangering the jobs and unemployment benefits of millions of Americans. It’s time to face reality and start cutting spending.”
DISCLOSE ACT: First Amendment foolery.
Rahm Emanuel expected to quite by the end of the year. From the Telegraph, “His abrasive style has rubbed some people the wrong way, while there has been frustration among Mr Obama’s closest advisers that he failed to deliver a smooth ride for the president’s legislative programme that his background promised.”
