With the economy returning to life, it is clearer than ever, the goal of the Democrat Covid spending bill is no longer short-term economic aid — it is to expand and solidify the role of government as the guarantor of every American’s income unlinked to any obligation to work. With today’s ALG Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. That is the conclusion of the Wall Street Journal’s editorial board and Americans for Limited Government agrees. While Congress is still working on its $1.9 trillion spending bill, Democrats are already floating a sequel. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is promising another massive spending bill. Only a small part of what Democrats passed is for pandemic or economic relief. It’s mainly a down payment on their cradle-to-grave welfare-entitlement state. Most of the $1.9 trillion will flow to government unions or supposedly temporary income transfers that Democrats intend to make permanent later this year. Just the latest example of the Democrat’s promise to never let a crisis go to waste.

A middle school choir teacher in Minnesota recently taught a class full of sixth-graders about various “types of oppression” by separating students into “privileged” and “targeted” categories. With today’s ALG Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. This is the latest example of educators and administrators force-feeding critical race theory and progressive political ideology to young, impressionable students — often while the social engineering campaign goes completely unnoticed by parents. According to lesson plan documents obtained by The Blaze the teacher told students, “Last week, we talked about how hard it is to talk about race, and the level of difficulty is different for different people. For people who are privileged, it’s much easier to talk about race and other issues. For people who are not privileged, it’s much harder. Today, we will look at different types of oppression, and whether each of us is in the privileged group or the targeted group.” The chart listed five types of oppression for the students’ consideration: Racism, sexism, religious oppression, heterosexism, and xenophobia. Viral photos from a school in Washington are now raising questions about the lengths some are going to keep student, teachers, and staff safe in schools. With Today’s ALG Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. Images from a band rehearsal at Wenatchee High School circulated showing students practicing inside individual green tents. While most seemed to fit, it was a tight squeeze for the poor tuba player. Social media lit up over the images, with people wondering what these over-the-top health precautions are doing to kids. One person tweeted: We have reached peak absurdity. The nation is doomed if we don’t dismantle the administrative state right now. Still, the school Principal claims all are happy to be back at school. “It is amazing the level of energy in the building, having adults interacting with kids but also the conversations of adults to adults. California’s wealthy elite have been doing very well during the coronavirus pandemic, despite economic shutdowns that have devastated small businesses and caused widespread job losses and disruption. With Today’s ALG Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. The Associated Press recently reported: At the end of 2020, California had lost a record 1.6 million jobs during the pandemic. Nearly a half-million people stopped even trying to look for work. Business properties saw their value plummet more than 30%. With the pandemic forcing the closure of bars, restaurants, theme parks, sporting events and small businesses, lower-wage workers bore the brunt of the losses while the wealthier worked from home. The economic losses started at the bottom of the income ladder and so far they haven’t made their way up to the top. With the rich doing well, thanks to the growing dominance of Silicon Valley, the rising stock market, and the health of Hollywood’s streaming entertainment industry for a stay-at-home nation, state revenues have soared far beyond expectations. Markets are signaling that an economy that plunged into its deepest recession in decades just a year ago is ready to roar. With Today’s ALG Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal says the recent rally on Wall Street show investors believe the fun is just getting started. Major U.S. stock indexes have set 32 record highs in 2021, including a recent surge by the Dow industrials average. Investors believe pent-up consumer demand could be a big part of the coming economic revival. As the U.S. moves past the pandemic, markets are saying Americans will spend on big-ticket items such as vacations and weddings, and companies will go on hiring sprees. The most optimistic investors believe the economy, just months after it was devastated by the pandemic, will bounce back in a manner akin to the Roaring ’20s. And then there’s this: the chairman of the federal reserve signaled he will not raise interest rates soon!

During the pandemic, police officers around the country say a rise in teenagers forcibly stealing occupied cars going for joy rides is the result of Covid lockdown’s social isolation, and disengagement. With Today’s ALG Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. Police departments in cities around the country are also reporting a rise in carjackings, often committed by teens too young for their licenses. Law-enforcement officials blame the rise in part on virtual learning. They say for many children, the pandemic has led to anxiety and depression. D.C.’s Acting Police Chief Robert Contee said “When you have children who are not in school and that structure is not in place, I think it aligns perfectly with the increases in carjackings that we’ve seen in our city.” Police figures show that carjackings also jumped sharply last year in several other cities—by 301% in Minneapolis, 148% in New York City, 125% in Chicago, 80% in Philadelphia and 42% in Las Vegas.
