THE GRINCH WHO STOLE CHILDREN’S FUTURES

Pelto_GrinchBy Rick Manning

In the Dr. Seuss classicstory, the Grinch steals gifts and toys from the children because he doesn’t understand the generosity of others or the spirit of giving of the season.

So what is liberal blogger Jonathan Pelto’s excuse for his tireless efforts to steal quality educations and scholarship opportunities from Hartford, Connecticut’s deserving public school students? Pelto rails against education reform, he bullies officials, gets his facts wrong, threatens scholarship programs, and hurts students along the way. Let’s hope he’s not driven by racism, given that an overwhelming majority of the students he’s hurting are black and Latino. Let’s hope it’s not mere snobbery, given his personal campaign will only achieve the horrid goal of keeping poor kids poor, effectively shutting the door on their future opportunities to learn, grow and compete in a tough world. Let’s hope his personal tirades are based on something nobler than petty politics or personal gain, but his lack of any constructive solutions leads us to assume the worst.

The old saying says:  “If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.” And in this respect, Pelto is the face of the problem. No answers. No solutions. Nothing constructive. Merely attacks on public servants who are typing to make a difference.

At the end of the Dr. Suess story, the Grinch found his heart and repaired the damage he caused. Let’s hope Mr. Pelto’s story has an equally happier ending. We’ll be watching.
