Even with a billion-dollar federal government Covid bailout, public schools across the country are headed toward a financial cliff. Many school districts across the country are reporting preliminary enrollment numbers that are well below pre-Covid levels. With enrollment numbers tied directly to the district’s funds, it’s imperative that students show up to school. Cutting into enrollment is the rise of home-schooling. Home-schooling has shown its staying power after starting as a temporary approach to education during the lockdown. Typically, a little more than 3% of the nation’s school-age children are home-schooled in a given year, according to federal data. However, a significant surge has been confirmed by the U.S. Census Bureau, which reported that in March, the rate of home-schooling rose to 11% by September 2020. It may not just be Covid restrictions that’s causing parents to pull their children out of public schools. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy suggests House Democrats may have contributed to the Afghanistan debacle. With today’s Americans for Limited Government Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. In his weekly news conference McCarthy notes that Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the House back for an emergency session – not to deal with the disaster in Afghanistan – but to pass a totally unrelated spending bill. He also suggests the house intelligence committee may have dropped the ball in terms of providing oversight and guidance to our intelligence communities in recent months.
“This Democrat majority and Adam Schiff, shifted the entire intel committee to be one of impeachment and political. What did we miss? Devin Nunes has warned us time and before about the number of hearings we wanted to have to look at the international threats out there.”

Small victory for sanity in our public schools! With today’s Americans for Limited Government Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. The board of education in Stonington, Connecticut, has reversed its decision to rename Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day after substantial criticism – much of it attacking the teaching of Critical Race Theory in the district. No one should be wiping the name Columbus off the calendar. We can’t impose our present time on previous times. Students should not be made to feel guilty for what happened in fourteen-ninety-two. Critical Race Theory is a Marxist philosophy that embraces the concept that all social and cultural issues should be viewed through the lens of race. As schools prepare to reopen this fall, it will be interesting to see if woke school boards continue pushing CRT nonsense, or if our vocal opposition has done the job. Despite pleas from the Biden administration, OPEC+ has no intention of bolstering its oil production further before twenty-twenty-two. With today’s Americans for Limited Government Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. According to Reuters, OPEC+ leaders see no reason to ramp up oil production further. The Biden administration begging OPEC to produce more oil because – quote “At a critical moment in the global recovery, this is simply not enough. Higher gasoline costs, if left unchecked, risk harming the ongoing global recovery. The price of crude oil is higher today than it was at the end of twenty nineteen before the pandemic. OPEC will meet in September to decide on other policy. Or perhaps, the Biden administration could simply allow our own domestic producers to drill again. Biden has canceled oil and gas leases on federal lands and shut down the keystone XL pipeline. His energy policies are a disaster. Just 8 months ago we were energy independent. An inspector general report at the Labor Department estimates nearly eighty-seven billion dollars of unemployment insurance fraud this past year. With today’s Americans for Limited Government Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. This is one of the greatest financial swindles of all time. And instead of heads rolling in Washington, the politicians yawn – and even ask for MORE money for the program. CNBC recently investigated the fraud and was told by a senior policy advisor at the Department of Labor: “Fraud has gotten so big…What we’re seeing now is really terrifying.” The labor department’s response is to offer two-hundred and forty million dollars in grants to state governments to fight this fraud. Much of the early fraud had been concentrated around a federal program for the self-employed and others that let applicants self-certify their eligibility for benefits. That feature helped deliver aid more quickly but opened the door to criminals looking to exploit the system. The federal government’s unemployment bonus programs is slated to end September sixth. The Biden White House is touting a NY Times opinion piece by economist Paul Krugman, who thinks inflation is under control. With today’s Americans for Limited Government Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. Krugman writes that the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal will “alleviate the supply bottlenecks that have played a big role in recent inflation, while making workers more productive.” Right. So borrowing and printing money will REDUCE inflation. And that kind of sage advice wins you a Nobel Prize. The Biden White House is evidently unaware that no one has been more consistently wrong on inflation over the last forty years than Krugman. In nineteen eighty-three he wrote a famous memo to President Ronald Reagan called “The Inflation Time Bomb.” In that memo he argued that the low inflation rates in Reagan’s first two years in office were “merely temporary. In reality, inflation fell from eleven to three percent in two years under Reagan and continued to stay low – and so did oil prices – for pretty much the next two decades. New York’s state lawmakers will issue a public report on their findings from an impeachment probe into Andrew Cuomo’s sexual misconduct and his horrific handling of COVID and the subsequent cover-up. The Democratic-controlled legislature tried to bury its investigation of the disgraced governor who says “he always put New York first,” after he announced he was resigning. Cuomo administration deliberately undercounted the number of COVID nursing home deaths, rewrote a health department report to hide the real number, and then refused to release the real death numbers for months.
