To hear House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tell it, President Donald Trump’s efforts to reform the Postal Service — which began with an April 2018 executive order appointing a task force to bring USPS into solvency almost two years before there was any COVID-19 pandemic — were intended to undermine increased requests for mail-in and absentee ballots in 2020 in response to the pandemic. In an Aug. 16 dear colleague letter, Pelosi alleged, “Alarmingly, across the nation, we see the devastating effects of the President’s campaign to sabotage the election by manipulating the Postal Service to disenfranchise voters… [with] sweeping new operational changes that degrade postal service, delay the mail, and… threaten to deny the ability of eligible Americans to cast their votes through the mail in the upcoming elections in a timely fashion.” It’s a conspiracy theory. For it to be true, Trump and the Postal Service had to know in 2018 there would be a global pandemic in 2020 and that states would extend deadlines associated with mail-in and absentee ballots which would preclude timely delivery by the Postal Service. In reality the Postal Service is warning states that voters should request ballots at least 15 days before Election Day, or Oct.19, that election officials should use first-class mail and not third-class mail to send blank ballots and allow one week for delivery to voters, and that voters should mail in their ballots no later than Oct. 27, a week before the election on Nov. 3, in order to be counted in time. And that it first class mail takes 2-5 days to deliver and receives higher priority than third-class or marketing mail, which can take 3-10 days to deliver. The truth is, Pelosi wants $25 billion for the Postal Service including $3.3 billion for mail-in voting and she’s holding up President Trump’s request for more relief for small business forgivable loans and checks to the American people, who have been hard hit by the pandemic and its economic fallout. On Aug. 7, the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) issued an assessment stating, “We assess that China prefers that President Trump — whom Beijing sees as unpredictable — does not win reelection.” The assessment was reminiscent of the Jan. 2017 assessment issued by DNI prior to President Trump’s inauguration finding Russia had sought to help him defeat former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton: “We assess Putin, his advisers, and the Russian Government developed a clear preference for President-elect Trump over Secretary Clinton.” The 2017 statement for DNI was designed to knee-cap President Trump on his way into office, and to legitimize the FBI’s ongoing counterintelligence investigation into the Trump campaign and then the White House on false allegations that Trump and his campaign were Russian agents. It was a pretext to take down President Trump. At a time when the American people are already losing confidence in our nation’s security institutions, presidential administrations issuing more assessments about foreign adversaries preferring the incumbent party’s opponents does two things: 1) it politicizes intelligence agencies; and 2) it delegitimizes other intelligence gathering designed to avert real and present threats to national security. Given, then, the history involved with DNI’s prior assessment, the intelligence community should recognize that issuing an ill-advised statement that China wants President Trump to lose in November might similarly affect the presidential race — and stop interfering in presidential politics and elections. President Donald Trump is currently considering an executive order that will direct the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to implement a proposed 2018 rule instituting an International Pricing Index for Medicare Part B prescription drugs. The intent is to reduce drug costs for seniors. However, it will come at a significant cost to non-Medicare patients, who will be compelled to shoulder the costs of drug innovation. How do we know that? Because the U.S. is already bearing the costs of drug innovation for the rest of the world, which uses similar price controls, in turn passing along the costs to the American people, who pay far more than the rest of the world. Politically, this could also create an opening for Democrats to exploit the disparity by calling for more price controls or even for socialized medicine. House Democrats have proposed Medicare for All, while Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and former Vice President Joe Biden are similarly offering Biden’s public option. Either way, Democrats can bill socialized medicine as a means of reducing out-of-pocket prescription costs that non-Medicare patients will be burdened with under the CMS rule. Ultimately, the question that remains is who pays for the price of drug innovation?

Former Vice President Joe Biden has selected U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) as his running mate and presumptive Democratic Party nominee for Vice President in the 2020 election as the Biden campaign goes all in on the defund the police issue. In June Sen. Harris supported cutting $150 million from the Los Angeles Police Department budget and taking the police force below 10,000 for the first time in more than a decade. “I applaud Eric Garcetti for doing what he’s done,” Harris told ABC’s Good Morning America host George Stephanopoulos in June, adding, “Right now, what we’re seeing in America is many cities spend over one-third of their entire city budget on policing but meanwhile we’ve been defunding public schools for years in America.” The pick of Harris comes as Biden for his part has attempted to thread the needle on the issue, telling CBS News in an interview: “No, I don’t support defunding the police. I support conditioning federal aid to police based on whether or not they meet certain basic standards of decency and honorableness and … are able to demonstrate they can protect the community.” Meaning, if police departments did not meet up with Biden’s criteria, he would indeed deny funds. In June, an ABC News/Ipsos poll found 64 percent of Americans reject the idea of defunding the police, including 91 percent of Republicans, 45 percent of Democrats, 43 percent of blacks, 58 percent of Hispanics and 74 percent of whites. In short, Harris is a sop to the BLM-Antifa wing of the party, a signal by Biden to the rioters that says “I’m with you”, but at the cost of moderate Democrats in suburban areas who oppose defunding the police. The Producer Price Index and Consumer Price Index have both recovered dramatically in the month of July, each growing 0.6 percent amid increased demand for oil and gasoline, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). About one-third of the producer price jump and one-quarter of the consumer price increase, BLS says, comes from increased gasoline consumption and higher fuel prices as millions of Americans get back to work and are hitting the roads. In the past three months alone, more than 10 million jobs have been restored as states are slowly reopening. Oil, which dropped below zero in April, has now safely recovered to over $42 a barrel and crude oil inventories are finally slowly clearing out after reaching record highs earlier this year. After the second quarter set a record on the downside as the Gross Domestic Product contracted 32.9 percent, the rebound both in producer prices and in consumer prices, which also grew 0.6 percent in June, coupled with the jobs gains, promises that the third quarter will set a record on the upside. Further fueling the economic recovery, the U.S. dollar relative to foreign trade partner currencies has finally corrected off of record highs after financial institutions and central banks had flooded into U.S. treasuries and dollar-denominated assets amid the flight to safety this spring and early summer. All of which bodes extremely well for the third quarter that began in July. Deflation is averted — for now as daily Covid cases have stabilized. But will the economy just start contracting again later in the fall when virus cases begin rising again?

President Donald Trump on Twitter on Aug. 10, urged Oregon Democratic Governor Kate Brown to deploy the National Guard after a riot was declared in Portland, Oreg. when the Portland Police Association (PPA) building was set on fire. “Portland, which is out of control, should finally, after almost 3 months, bring in the National Guard. The Mayor and Governor are putting people’s lives at risk. They will be held responsible. The Guard is ready to act immediately. The Courthouse is secured by Homeland!” Trump wrote. But Oregon Democratic Governor Kate Brown may simply lack the political will to do what is necessary to preserve law and order for fear it might help President Trump politically. That’s just too bad. Governor Brown and Mayor Wheeler must realize that if they refuse to restore civil order, President Trump is more than willing to step in and do it for them. What do you think?
