A new study confirms that liberal blue states like New York and New Jersey had by far the worst pandemic record in terms of keeping people healthy and minimizing economic damage. With Today’s ALG Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. The consulting firm Hamilton Place Strategies tells us just who did best on both measures. As a nation, 13 jobs were lost for every person who died from COVID-19 in the past year.

The study finds that New York had the worst overall outcome, with both high excess deaths and high job losses. Those with the best result were Idaho, Utah, and West Virginia.

New York instituted severe lockdowns AND suffered catastrophic loss of life. Its unemployment was the nation’s second highest – behind Hawaii. New York Governor Mario Cuomo’s lockdown destroyed much of his local economy while his decision to send COVID-19 patients into nursing homes increased the number of deaths in them. How the media celebrated this Master of Disaster for as long as they did shows just how flawed their coverage of the pandemic has been.

After being exposed by conservative news outlets, Michigan State University has backed down from a highly offensive attempt to separate black and white attendees at an upcoming conference. With today’s ALG minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. Officials planned to segregate participants based on their skin color to facilitate what they called affinity group conversations. An email promoting the event said – quote There will be an affinity group for white folx and an affinity group for people of color. Folks was spelled F-O-L-X. The university states the needs for such racial segregation by noting it will “advance racial equity,” adding “there is work for white people and people of color to do separately and together. For white people, an affinity group provides time and space to work explicitly and intentionally on understanding white culture and white privilege and to increase one’s critical analysis around these concepts. As a result of the College Fix new site media exposure the university has dropped the segregation plan.

In a scathing open letter to woke CEOs, Florida Senator Rick Scott told them the backlash is coming. With today’s ALG Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. Scott told Fox News this week that these CEOs lied to the American people about the Georgia election integrity laws and when Republicans reclaim the majorities in the House and Senate in the next elections, they will pay a price.

“And these companies that come up here, I watched when I was governor of Florida,” Scott said. “They come up here and they say, Oh, help us, help us, help us, and there’s all this corporate welfare, it’s going away, because people because Republicans are getting our We’re fed up with the companies that come up here and beg us to help them with their corporate welfare like, think, think about these airlines how much money we get the airline industry, just last year in the Cares Act. They come begging for billions of dollars, and then they want to come and lecture us about how we should do elections?”

These elitist CEOs will rue the day they caved to the leftist mob and started acting more like dishonest politicians than the politically neutral capitalists they should be.

A new study by the Heritage Foundation finds that Joe Biden’s plan to hike the corporate tax rate to 28 percent will reduce long-run GDP by about 1 percent – meaning a cost of about $1,650 per American household. With today’s ALG Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. But that’s not all. Heritage economist Parker Sheppard also finds the higher tax rate harms both shareholders and workers. Wages will fall by about 1.27 percent as less investment lowers productivity. Who actually pays the tax? Economic theory shows that the actual costs of taxation are not necessarily borne by whomever statutorily pays the tax. This is because taxes raise costs, and people adjust their behavior in response to the new cost. The exact shares of the burden that fall on capital and labor are a point of debate in the literature, but there is agreement that it is not just corporate shareholders that pay the tax.

Uh Oh: Democrats are bleeding support from one of their key voting blocs. With today’s ALG Minute, I’m Catherine Mortensen. The further left the party goes, the more black and Hispanic voters flee the party. From California to Florida, those groups fled the Democrats in 2020. White liberals are increasingly more left-wing than black and Hispanic constituencies. The defund the police movement isn’t helping. Minority communities want more police around. White liberals and these nonwhite voter blocs are not on the same page on immigration, racial resentment, and other issues that you see the ‘woke’ whine about. Findings of a new study by Equis are likely to fuel hand-wringing among Democratic strategists who worried that Mr. Biden had not done enough to court skeptical Latino voters. Hispanic voters are not gung-ho about a pathway to citizenship. It’s not unpopular per se, but it barely breaks 50 percent support. Clearly, Hispanics and black americans want to live in a country where law and order are respected.
